Hungary: the dictatorial, anti-Semitic 1930s revived

A protest against the totalitarian methods of Fidesz, again.
A Hungarian Facebook group⁽¹⁾ has initiated a demonstration of solidarity with two Hungarian journalists.

... the self-imposed cencorship already works very well, maybe except for Népszabadság. Kossuth Rádió for example has suspended the two moderators Attila Mong and Zsolt Bogár for protesting against the media bill by having a minute of silence on air during their show.⁽²⁾

Kossuth Rádió presenter Attila Mong and editor Zsolt Bogár yesterday morning broadcast a minute's silence to protest the media act that Parliament had passed a few hours earlier.

The pair were ordered to the office of new managing director István Jónás and editor-in-chief Ferenc L. Gazsó and suspended from the programme until the case is investigated, although they can continue to work as reporters.⁽³⁾

Conservative German daily Die Welt wrote that "in Hungary we can see how quickly a democracy can destroy itself… it is as if a film that was stopped in the dictatorial, anti-Semitic 1930s is now rolling again."⁽⁴⁾

Szaniszló: "Hungarians God’s chosen people"

It is a real pity that Hungarian is such a difficult language. [1] Watching the Budapest extreme right Echo TV⁽²⁾ in 2010 and listening to the monologue of Ferenc Szaniszló⁽³⁾, I thought Colonel Blimp was reborn in the Carpathian basin. The only difference, he doesn’t speak English but Hungarian and he has no moustache. But it is the same Jingoism. He adds nonsense dressed up as scientific fact plus coded antisemitism.

Ferenc Szaniszló was sent during the Brezhnev time to study journalism in Moscow and became the correspondent of the government daily “Magyar Hirlap”⁽⁴⁾ in the Soviet Union. And like so many Hungarian journalists who were loyal scribblers during communism became later a turncoat and joined the rightwing choir.

In his monologue he informs his public that the Hungarians are gods chosen people.

The style of conservative media in Hungary

The next election for the National Assembly or Országgyülés will be held in April 2010. Opinion polls predict the victory of the rightwing Fidesz block led by Viktor Orbán. The journalist György Vámos writes for “Magyar Hirlap”, a daily owned by the conservative multimillionaire Gábor Széles, who owns also Echo TV. The daily is close to Fidesz and has published some anti-Semitic articles in the past.
