Special lecture on Wednesday 24 November 2010, 7pm by Magdalena Marsovszky at The Wiener Library in London, the world's oldest Holocaust memorial institution.
Organised in partnership with Searchlight, the international anti-fascist magazine.

Magdalena Marsovszky is an independent scholar and author living in Munich and Budapest. As a member of the board of Villigst Research Forum on National Socialism, Racism and Antisemitism (forschungsforum.net), her specialist fields of academic research include the study of antisemitism as a cultural attitude, ethnicity and völkisch thinking and antiziganism.

She has particularly monitored and written extensively about the growth of hatred and hate speech against Jews and Roma since the Hungarian elections of April 2010 in which a right-wing conservative government was elected with a massive majority and in which Jobbik, the sister organisation of the right-wing extremist British National Party, was able to win 47 seats in the national parliament. Currently she is delivering lectures in Germany and the UK on the situation in Hungary. Her lecture at the Wiener Library is her first in this country.

The lecture will be held at The Wiener Library, 4 Devonshire Street, London, W1W 5BH.

To ensure you get a seat on the night, please make sure you arrive at the Library at least ten minutes before the lecture is due to start. Nazi-Provocation in Budapest on June 16

Hungary, Budapest, 16/06/2010: Nazi Film “The eternal Jew” to be shown

SYDNEY-BUDAPEST – The extreme right organisations distribute on a daily basis Nazi and arrow cross propaganda, prepared by the two Australian-Hungarian citizens brothers Gede (Sándor Gede and Tibor Gede) prepare. According to their statement at a Hungarian court in 2004, they invest the whole income of their non-profit organisation into the production of new books, films and brochures. Sándor Gede who is blind works at the Telephone exchange of the Control office for Taxes and Finance… Their enterprise becomes after a longer period again active, as one can learn from their notice, they will screen on June 16 and 17 at 18.00h the Nazi documentary film „The eternal Jew“.

The propagandists who came from Australia write about this synchronised film: „This terrifying accurate and enlightening German documentary film shows the character of world Jewry and its history, through the traditional European moral. The German campaign in Poland made it possible, that we know the Jewish people in their own nest.

The makers of this film visited in 1940 the ghetto in Lodz, so that with the collaboration of Jews and with original pictures they can show more clearly the destructive and bloodthirsty nature…“

Some intention and even provocation can be suspected, when the Gede Brothers enterprise starts only two weeks after the Orban-Government was sworn in the screening of Nazi films, which has caused before a national scandal.

"Kitartás" is part of the „Kitartás! Éljen Szálasi!” (circa: Don't give up! Szálasi hurrah!), the slogan and salute with the infamous arm-movement of the Hungarian nazi party, the  National Socialist Arrow Cross Party (hu: Nyilaspárt). The leader of it was Szálasi Ferenc. Understanding nationalist ideology in Hungary

"Victory in April’s elections is assured for the populist opposition party (Fidesz) and right-wing extremists (Jobbik).

The shift to the right in Hungarian politics is alarming. Despite a ban imposed in 2009, the paramilitary Hungarian Guard of the right-wing Jobbik party presses on through the country, stirring up hatred both against jews and the crimes of the Roma community in the name of the Great Nation of Hungary.

Jobbik openly says what everyone is thinking, and what the majority of the press have been stirring up for years. Fidesz politicians stir these things up too, but they don’t act upon it. And now there is a new, revolutionary generation saying, We want to finally put into practice what our fathers motivated us to do. The journalist Attila Bujak once propounded the theory that Jobbik was invented by Fidesz. Following the election defeat in 2002, Bujak wrote that the former minister of the chancellory, István Stumpf, contended that Fidesz need a small party that is prepared to say to people that which the party can’t say out loud — after all, he claimed, Fidesz wants to remain a ‘serious party’. After the election defeat, the Fidesz opposition leader and election favourite Viktor Orbán created so-called ‘citizens’ circles’, to which the Jobbik chairman Gábor Vona was also invited. Orbán is, so to speak, Vona’s foster father. At that time, Vona was still a student and belonged to the university’s christian student union. Also, up until that point, no one yet considered Jobbik a far-right party. In the last local elections, it was very common for candidates to form coalitions with Jobbik. Only now, in the run-up to the election, are people distancing themselves."⁽¹⁾

Peaceful walk against Hungarian neo-nazism

A peaceful walk will be organized through the former ghetto area. We ask all participants that men and women come with kipa (or, possibly with a dark hat, but with covered head in any case) and with scarf, respectively.

Let us demonstrate that in 2010 in Budapest anyone can appear with kipa on the streets. Let us show our religious Jewish fellow-citizens that there are people whom they can rely on and we together outnumber those neo-Nazis who threw the stones.

And, that we don't accept that police handle that case as a property damage rather than "impeding somebody in the free exercise of his religion with violence" or "assaulting somebody else because he/she belongs or is believed to belong to a national, ethnic, racial or religious group, or coerces him with violence or menace into doing or not doing or into enduring something".

Chabad rabbi’s house by Great Synagogue attacked repeatedly

The home of a Chabad rabbi in Budapest was bombarded with rocks on Tuesday night as a number of people gathered there for the second Pesach seder.

The police was already on the spot, but another projectile slammed into the window. "The final incident was something stronger than just a rock being thrown," El-Bar said. "It seemed to come from some sort of primitive weapon, like a slingshot."⁽¹⁾

While leaving the guests  the police officers told them not to put on their kipa becouse it wouldn't safe.⁽²⁾

The police-office initiated proceedings on suspicion of damage, against an unknown perpetrator. ⁽³⁾

(2) The past returned: the Hungarian authorities cannot (or doesn't want to) protect Hungarian citizens endangered by farrights if they want to show their belief, their identity openly. From the history we know where this initial attitude leads.
(3) If fhe police-office doesn't find the fitting criminal code then it is inadequate in its skills or it doesn't want to find it.

The police handles the cause as a property damage:

Section 324

(1) The person who causes damage by the destruction or deterioration of an alien property item, commits
deterioration.
(2) The punishment shall be for a misdemeanour imprisonment of up to one year, labour in the public interest, or
fine, if
a) the deterioration causes a smaller damage,
b) the deterioration not exceeding the value limit of a minor offence is committed as part of a criminal conspiracy.

Section 174/A

The person who
a) restricts another person in his freedom of conscience with violence or menace,
b) who impedes him in the free exercise of his religion with violence or menace,
commits a felony, and shall be punishable with imprisonment of up to three years.
Violence Against a Member of a National, Ethnic, Racial or Religious Group

Section 174/B

(1) The person who assaults somebody else because he belongs or is believed to belong to a national, ethnic, racial or religious group, or coerces him with violence or menace into doing or not doing or into enduring something, commits a felony and shall be punishable with imprisonment up to five years.
(2) The punishment shall be imprisonment from two years to eight years, if the act of crime is committed
a) by force of arms,
b) in an armed manner,
c) causing a considerable injury of interest,
d) with the torment of the injured party,
e) in groups,
f) in criminal conspiracy.

National day: abuse Jews, passers-by

15th March 2010, National Day of Hungary, Budapest, Deák tér, event of Jobbik.

Bloggers⁽¹⁾ were eyewitnesses of an incident. They recorded it and published the video on YouTube⁽²⁾ and some added information in their blog⁽³⁾. Thanks to them.

The video shows an example, how the Hungarian law authorities (here the police) assist the Hungarian far-rights with their provocations - this has been happening for at least 8 years.

On the video we can hear talks in Hungarian; unfortunately we still cannot give you the perfect English translation. (If somebody can help us with it, we are waiting with many thanks.)

But till then a brief is here:

The scene is at the end of the celebration, actually an election rally of the Neo-Nazi party Jobbik. The sounds of the "national anthem" of the far-rights, the "székely himnusz" can be heard in the background. Some fans of Jobbik are insulting, even abusing the passers-by who are moving and crossing the street. They are asking them why they are not standing still as is customary when the anthem can be heard. The Jobbik's are shouting, scolding, even swearing aggressively at them for their wrong behaviour: "you are not Hungarian, you are a Jew", etc. A young man is prevented from moving by Jobbik's. He cannot bear the humiliation and talks back to them. The quarrelling and jostling are increasing.

The policemen are flooring and pushing the insulted young man rudely against the shop-windows while Neo-Nazis are raging on and abusing him continuously. The provoker is shouting to the policemen: "Catch him! Handcuff him! May I help you with it?". Then he says: "How annoying when I'm on a Hungarian event and I'm disturb and manhandled." Says to a policeman: "I'm a military major, you know!"

Meanwhile, a heated far-right crowd gathered on the spot. Once the far-rights are beginning to repeat "We caught a komcsi!" ("komcsi" is pejorative form for "communist" - pronounce: ~ comchi ). The main Neo-Nazi provoker is saying he is filing a complaint for being named fascist and beaten. Their mates are volunteering to be witness in the police procedure.

Look, how a "Jew" becomes a "komcsi". And vice versa. The hate produces its object - independently of facts.

Jew-free car - free in Hungary

2010th 03.09. Budapest

There is a Püski-Masszi bookstore ⁽¹⁾ in the Tóth Kálmán street in Budapest. According to its offers, events, the banners on its website, it seems to be a meeting place and think-tank of far-rights. Just a few meters from the shop, in the Mester street 67., there is a primary school where mostly Roma pupils go. The book-store is apparently frequented by "interesting" characters in "interesting" dresses - to show their extreme (irredentist, anti-Semitic) ideas.

The owner of the car went to the shop. To an event, maybe. On the car is a caption: "Jew-free car", and other irredentist and nationalistic stickers and slogans, too.
